Voice Assistants
Voice assistants like Siri, Google Assistant, and Alexa use AI to understand what you say and help you out. How do they work?
Step 1: Listening
When you say "Hey Siri" or "OK Google", your device starts listening. It records the sound of your voice.
Step 2: Speech to text
AI converts the sounds you made into written words. This is called speech recognition. It is tricky because everyone speaks differently — different accents, speeds, and ways of saying things!
Step 3: Understanding
Another AI reads those words and tries to figure out what you want. "What is the weather like?" means something very different from "Play some weather sounds." The AI has learned from millions of examples of how people ask questions.
Step 4: Finding the answer
The AI searches for the right information and puts together a reply.
Step 5: Speaking back
Finally, another AI converts the written answer back into spoken words — that is the voice you hear!
Fun to think about
All five of those steps happen in under two seconds. And each step uses a different AI system doing its specific job!
