AI as a Writing Partner
AI is a genuinely useful writing partner — if you use it the right way. The key is to stay in the driver seat and treat AI as a collaborator, not a ghostwriter.
What AI is good at in writing
- First drafts. Staring at a blank page is the hardest part of writing. AI can get words on the page quickly, giving you something to react to and edit.
- Rewriting and editing. Paste in something you have written and ask AI to "make this more concise", "improve the flow", or "make this more professional".
- Changing tone. "Rewrite this email to sound warmer" or "make this more formal" are instructions AI handles well.
- Overcoming blocks. Not sure how to start or end something? Ask AI for three different options and pick the one that fits.
What to watch for
AI writing tends to be generic, over-formal, and full of filler phrases. Phrases like "In today's rapidly evolving landscape" or "It is important to note that" are classic AI tells. Good editing strips these out and puts your voice back in.
AI will also sometimes include plausible-sounding facts that are simply wrong. Never publish AI-assisted writing without checking any factual claims.
Keeping your voice
The best AI-assisted writing sounds like you on a good day — not like a generic robot. Use AI to handle the scaffolding, then rewrite in your own voice. Share examples of writing you like and ask AI to match the style.
