AI has changed how people find and process information. Understanding its strengths and weaknesses as a research tool can save you time — and prevent you from being misled.

What AI is useful for in research

Summarising long documents. Paste in a research paper, a council report, or a long article and ask AI to summarise the key points. This can turn an hour of reading into five minutes.

Explaining complex topics. Ask AI to explain concepts in plain language, or to explain something "as if I am completely new to this topic". It is often better at this than textbooks or Wikipedia.

Generating questions. Ask AI "what questions should I be asking about this topic?" to identify gaps in your knowledge before you start researching.

Organising information. If you have gathered a lot of information, AI can help you identify themes, contradictions, and gaps.

What to be careful about

AI can confidently state facts that are wrong, cite studies that do not exist, and present outdated information as current. For anything consequential — health decisions, legal questions, financial planning — treat AI responses as a starting point, not an endpoint. Verify key facts with primary sources.

AI versus search engines

Search engines find sources. AI synthesises and explains. They are complementary tools, not competitors. Use AI to understand a topic, then search for primary sources to verify and deepen your knowledge.

AI is the fastest way to get from "I know nothing about this" to "I understand enough to ask the right questions". What it cannot do is replace the primary sources those questions should lead you to.
