Healthcare is one of the most promising — and most sensitive — areas of AI application. New Zealand is already seeing AI used in clinical settings, with significant implications for patients and health professionals alike.
Diagnosis support
AI systems can analyse medical images with a level of accuracy that matches or exceeds experienced specialists in some tasks. Radiology AI can detect fractures, tumours, and other conditions in X-rays and scans. This does not replace radiologists — it helps them work faster and catch things they might otherwise miss.
Predictive health
Te Whatu Ora Health New Zealand has been exploring AI to predict which patients are at risk of deteriorating, allowing earlier intervention. These systems can identify patterns across thousands of variables that no human could track simultaneously.
Administrative burden
A significant amount of doctor and nurse time is spent on documentation. AI tools that can transcribe and summarise consultations in real time could free up hours of clinical time per day — potentially one of the highest-value applications of AI in healthcare.
The risks
Healthcare AI carries significant risks if it gets things wrong. Biased training data can produce systems that perform worse for Maori and Pasifika patients than for Pakeha New Zealanders. Over-reliance on AI recommendations can erode clinical judgement. And patient data used to train AI raises serious privacy and consent questions.
AI in healthcare should raise the floor of care quality for everyone — not create a two-tier system where the best tools are available only to those who can pay for them.
